Beholder…

For the last 5 days I’ve been working on a Beholder… See, my husband bought me a coloring book… a really cool coloring book…

Before the book arrived he received two pdf images from the coloring book and printed them out for me… One was the Beholder…

A Beholder is a floating Monster with a giant eye and several eyestalks, each eye is capable of a different type of debilitating ray, it’s a nasty monster to come across in a RPG game… but it is also awesome in its gruesomeness! 😀  Also tentacles!

I’ve been obsessed with the ability to make it look like things are glowing in artwork…

So with the print-out of the Beholder, I set out to see if I could make it look like there was a purple light shining on a green Beholder… I decided to do a bit a research and took photos of a little green dragon with purple light…

At some point, I decided that I wanted the eye to look shiny like a gem… so I read up on one of my ebooks, 3D Tangle: Shading Smooth Gems.  I practiced a gem, then I drew an eye and practiced on it… awesome!

I created a little gif of my work in progress, because I think it’s fun to see the progression… and because you will never see this version of the art once you are finished if you don’t take photos throughout…

So here it is, my project… not quite finished, I’m not sure what I’m going to do with the creatures around the edges yet.  I added the Zentangle pattern Nekton to the background to breakup some of the vast space… Enjoy
